BIO

Elizabeth LaFlamme is a figurative oil painter that experiments with the idea of connecting in America.  Born in San Diego, CA in 1987, she became fascinated with cultures since grade school.  She spent time living in Okinawa, Japan and around the U.S. with her military family; being in constant contact with people of different backgrounds, the interplay of race, color, and religion has always been an intriguing dance for her.

Ms. LaFlamme studied at Old Dominion University in Norfolk VA where she obtained her B.A. in studio art in 2011.  She is in private collections across the United States and has exhibited at numerous art fairs in Virginia Beach, VA.and San Antonio, TX.  At the 2016 Inspire Community Fine Art Center's Annual Juried Show her painting Earth Mothers was awarded Best in Show. Currently, Ms. LaFlamme resides in Yokosuka, Japan.  She is building a new body of work which she looks forward to exhibiting in the near future.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My creative process is a lot like taking a walk.  Sometimes, I have a precise purpose and destination.  Other times, I may meander down this way and that until I end up in an unexpected place, and sometimes back where I started.  Either way I walk, I am in constant reflection of the connections between human beings, the inner self, and our environment.

If we pay attention, we can feel the invisible spider webs of energy connecting us all.  We can be intuitive and sense others emotions; feel their pain and their joy.  These emotions unite us on one plane.  We all want the basics of safety, love, and joy, but also experience the darkness of life.  This makes us human.

I like to reflect both the joy and pain with color and movement in my paintings. Energy radiates out of us like the lines and curves in my paintings.  The color combinations I choose represent the brightness and the darkness that we all share, and that they live together in the same environment.  I like to play with these energies that unites humanity, and show others the unity we may have forgotten.
